One of the most anticipated moments of a wedding reception is the bride and groom’s first dance. For many couples, choosing a song and type of dance to do is very difficult. Let this guide help you to find your first dance style so you can hit the dance floor feeling confident on the day of your wedding.

Traditional: If you are having a classic white wedding, wearing your mother’s pearl bridal jewelry, and have a wedding etiquette book on hand at all times, this is your style. A traditional first dance is one which could have been done by your parents when they got married. In fact, if you love old customs like your mom’s pearl bridal jewelry, consider dancing to the same first song as your parents did as newlyweds. Or choose a timeless song like The Way You Look Tonight or Our Love is Here to Stay. Basically anything by Frank Sinatra is an excellent choice. As a bonus, those songs are very easy to sway to, if you and your intended don’t get around to taking formal dance lessons before the big day.

Modern: This is for the bride and groom who are having a wedding that very much looks like them. If comfort food appetizers, handcrafted invitations, and an ipod for the reception sound your type of wedding, then you are a modern or contemporary bride. For the first dance song, choose whatever your current favorite tune is and download it onto your ipod. Hopefully the song is somewhat romantic, but it can be so in a humorous or offbeat way, rather than a traditional or flowery way. Jack Johnson tunes are good if you don’t have any particular favs. Whatever song you choose, be careful to vet the lyrics and make sure they are appropriate for Grandma’s ears.

Flamboyant: You know who you are: the couple who dreams that their first dance will end up as a top attraction on YouTube! If you are dying to make a splash with your dance, think show biz number. A choreographed dance is the way to go for maximum impact. One of the more popular approaches is the old bait and switch; the dance starts off with a traditional song, and then in the middle the music suddenly changes to something else and the choreographed dance begins. Couples have been known to get the entire bridal party in on the act for these over-the-top productions. A word of caution: try to keep the wild dance in good taste; some of them are entirely too risque for a wedding!

Ballroom: If your favorite show is Dancing With the Stars, you know that ballroom dancing does not have to be sedate. Choose your favorite style, such as tango or cha-cha, and work with a dance instructor to learn all the right moves. The neat thing about a dance like the tango is that is it classical, but very passionate; a great combination for newlyweds! When done well, a ballroom style first dance can be truly breathtaking. Your guests are sure to be wowed by your skills!
